Halloween is a holiday where both kids and adults can dress up, pretend to be someone or something else, and scare each other silly. The city of Salem is the home of Halloween, people from around the world come and visit during the month of October. Whenever someone thinks about witches or wants to know more about them, they think about Salem. To celebrate this Salem throws out the welcome mat with a variety of events, ranging from costume contest, séance, to haunted houses. The residents of Salem go all out for Halloween. They decorate the houses, host parties and join in the fun. The downside of October in Salem is that everyone wants experience the horrors and the eeriness of Halloween resulting in massive amounts of traffic.
This October I decided to explore downtown Salem and participate in many Halloween themed events. I went to the opening parade during which someone jumped out and scared the bejesus out of me (wearing a bloody bunny mask). I went to the House of Seven Gables and learned its history and watched many, many scary movies that keep me up all night. For Halloween I was dressing up as a devil and I went downtown with my friends looking for something I could write about and stumbled across many things. First off, everyone was in costumes and they were amazing, I saw Bumblebee from transformers, the three witch sisters from hocus pocus and many other good costumes. The witches saw me and bowed down, saying “master”, as I was dressed as the Devil.
The event that I enjoyed the most was a concert that was on down by the common. It was being hosted by Radio 92.9. It was a band that was playing different songs from different types of music. Everyone in the band was dressed up; the lead singer, and the drummer were pirates, the guitarist was a witch and the bassist was a squirrel. The funny part it was it had already started and the squirrel jumped on the stage and bothered the guitarist before he started to play the bass. There were about 300 people there watching and dancing to the music. They played music from Adele to Annie Lennox and were talented. My friends and I sang at the top of our lungs. It was a great time. During the whole concert the lead singer’s mic was acting possessed, it cutting out on her. What I liked is that she kept on singing just like an actor, the show must go on.
Another great thing that happened was the audience were lifting each other, kind of like a mosh pit. Everyone kept moving closer to the stage. One person even ended up on stage and taking pictures with the guitarist while he was player. The guitarist was not happy. This concert was so much fun that I would totally recommend seeing it next year while you are visiting Halloween in Salem. I know I will be there next year.
